What is Area Converter?

Area units are the squares of length units, and because the length factors behind them are exact, the areas are too. A square foot is 0.09290304 m² because it is 0.3048 m squared; a square inch is 0.00064516 m² for the same reason. The acre is fixed at 4046.8564224 m², or exactly 43560 square feet, and the hectare is simply 10000 m², which makes the pair convert at 2.4710538 acres per hectare. Ten units are available from square millimetres to square miles, and the panel underneath shows your figure in all of them at the same moment — handy when you have a floor plan in one unit and a listing in another. Results are printed to eight decimal places, dropping to scientific notation outside the readable range. Nothing here is a survey measurement; areas are treated as exact squares.

Clear Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43560, no rounding involved. An acre is defined by statute as 4840 square yards, and a square yard is 3 feet on a side, giving 4840 x 9 = 43560 square feet. At the exact international foot that works out to 4046.8564224 m².
Is a hectare bigger or smaller than an acre?
Bigger, by a little over a tenth. A hectare is 10000 m² and an acre is 4046.8564224 m², so one hectare is 2.4710538 acres and an acre is 0.404686 hectares. Farmers outside the US and the UK usually think in hectares; almost everyone else still quotes acres.
Does this handle acres used for property title?
It converts the number correctly, but it measures nothing. Deed areas are often given in acres and hundredths, and irregular plots do not convert to square metres as neatly as the raw multiplication suggests. For anything binding, use the survey figure from the title document.
Why is 1 square foot 0.09290304 and not about 0.093?
Because 0.09290304 is the square of 0.3048, the international foot, to the digit. Area conversions inherit their precision from length: the tool never stores a separately rounded square-foot constant, so converting square feet to square inches and back lands on the same value you started with.
