What is Tip Calculator?

Enter the bill and a percentage, choose how many ways you are splitting it, and you get the tip, the total and each person's share. The rounding option exists because restaurant maths does not come out even: set it to round up per person and the tool rounds each share to the next whole currency unit, then re-derives the tip from the rounded total so bill plus tip still equals the total on screen. Set it to nearest and it rounds each share normally instead. Leave it off and the figures stay exact to the cent. The output is formatted in US dollars regardless of where you are, which is worth knowing before you paste the number into a receipt for a meal paid in another currency.

Calculate the tip and total bill for any percentage, and split it fairly between any number of people — with optional rounding to whole currency amounts.

Step-by-Step

How to use Tip Calculator

1

Type the bill amount before tax and service into the Bill amount field.

2

Set the Tip percentage, or override it if you are adding a fixed gratuity instead.

3

Enter how many people are sharing in the Split between field.

4

Choose a rounding mode from the Rounding selector, then read the per-person figure and the tip component.

Key Capabilities
  • Rounding is applied per person rather than to the whole bill, which is what actually happens when a table settles up.
  • When rounding is active the tip is recomputed from the rounded total, so the displayed rows remain arithmetically consistent.
  • Both a per-person share and a per-person tip are reported, which is what people ask for when the bill is itemised.
  • Entering fewer than one diner falls back to a single share instead of attempting to divide by zero.
Common Use Cases
  • A group of four settling a dinner works out what each person owes before the card is handed over.
  • A diner rounds up per person so nobody has to make change for a table of six.
  • A taxi driver or a bar tab keeper checks a gratuity against a fixed rate they charge by default.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the tip go on the pre-tax or post-tax bill?
Practice varies by country. In the United States the tip is normally calculated on the post-tax total; in much of Europe it is calculated on the bill before service is added. Enter whichever figure your restaurant expects.
What happens to the tip when I round up?
The total is rebuilt from the rounded per-person amounts and the tip is re-derived from that new total, so the three figures always reconcile rather than drifting apart.
Which currency does it use?
US dollars, with amounts formatted to two decimal places. It does not convert, so for a bill in another currency the arithmetic is still correct but the symbol is not.
Is there a right percentage?
For table service in the United States, 15 to 20 percent is the usual range and 18 percent is the common default. Tipping customs elsewhere are different, and in some countries a service charge is already on the bill.
